Hiking Backpacks with Rain Cover: Stay Dry, Go Further
If you spend any time wandering British hills, you’ll know that the weather has a mind of its own. One minute the sky’s clear, the next it’s throwing it down sideways. That’s why having a hiking backpack with a rain cover is such a game-changer. It keeps your kit dry when the clouds roll in, stops mud and spray from soaking through, and generally saves you from that sinking feeling of opening your pack to find everything damp. It’s a simple piece of gear that quietly makes every walk, from gentle Lakeland rambles to big Scottish treks, far more enjoyable.
Key features of a great hiking backpack rain cover
Waterproof fabric and coatings
The best covers use tough, lightweight materials such as ripstop nylon or silicone-coated fabrics that shed water before it has a chance to cling. When the heavens open for hours at a time, seam sealing and proper waterproof treatments make all the difference, stopping moisture creeping in through stitching.
Size, fit and compatibility
A good rain cover should hug your pack rather than hang off it like a loose jacket. Whether your rucksack is a compact 20-litre daypack or a big 70-litre expedition bag, choosing a cover that matches the shape and volume is what keeps everything properly protected. Some backpacks include an integrated rain cover, but a standalone one works just as well if the sizing is spot-on.
Attachment, stability and visibility
Most covers use elastic or a simple drawcord, and the ones worth having grip firmly even when you’re scrambling up wet rock or leaning into a windy ridge. High-vis colours and reflective strips are worth considering too, as they help you stand out when conditions turn murky.
Packability and weight
A rain cover spends most of its life tucked away, so it should pack down tiny and weigh next to nothing. The lightweight versions barely tip the scales and squash neatly into their own little pouch, ready to pull out the moment the sky starts looking mischievous.
Benefits in real-world UK hiking and camping
Shielding kit in unpredictable British weather
From gentle drizzle in the Brecon Beacons to full-on sideways rain on Snowdon, a proper waterproof cover keeps spare layers, food, electronics and everything else dry. It’s one of those bits of gear you appreciate most when the weather decides to try its luck.
Protecting your load on rugged terrain and multi-day treks
If you’re carrying precious kit on a long weekend or longer adventure, that extra protective layer gives real peace of mind. Even backpacks with water-resistant fabric can eventually give way in heavy weather, so a rain cover acts as your insurance against leaks and soaked clothing.
Versatility for day hikes, weekend trips and commuting
A good cover isn’t just for hill days. It’s handy on the commute too, especially if you use the same pack for work and walking. When the rain comes out of nowhere on your dash to the station, the cover earns its keep.
Buying tips – what to look for when choosing a rain cover
Matching your backpack volume and shape
It’s worth double-checking the litre capacity of your pack and making sure the cover lines up with it. A cover that’s too big tends to flap about, while one that’s too small leaves corners exposed, and those corners are exactly where rain likes to sneak in.
Material durability, seams and waterproof rating
Have a quick look at how the cover is made. Strong fabric, sealed seams and proper waterproofing are signs it’ll hold up over many seasons. Some even include drain holes so water doesn’t pool on the surface.
Ease of putting it on and storing it
When the weather turns suddenly, you want a cover that goes on without any faff. A simple design that pulls over the pack in seconds and packs down neatly afterwards will save you plenty of bother.
Additional features: high-vis colour, reflectors, branded integration
Reflective detailing and bright colours can boost your visibility in low-light or fog. If your pack already includes a built-in cover, you might not need a second one, but a spare can still be useful if you’re heading into very wet or windy terrain.
